Kadam sir through this video has provided students with comprehensive understanding of how to structure and frame answer while writing mains examinations of UPSC. In this Video Kadam sir has discussed question on topic of Meta Ethics which is based on comparison of Absolutist Vs Relativist Ethics. Some people feel that values keep changing with time and situation, while others strongly believe that there are certain universal and eternal human values. Give your perception in this regard with due justification. (10 marks | 150 words) Whether Values keep changing with time and situation or there exist some immutable eternal values which remain constant across universe is long standing debate in ethics. According to Viewpoint of moral relativism, moral values keep changing with time & situation. Moral relativism beliefs that conflicting moral truths can exist and moral values can change with time(Temporal relativism) or Situation. For ex for moral relativists there is no moral law defining Lying is universally good or universally bad; but whether to lie or not is based on situational analysis. This relativist morality view was advocated by thinkers like Mahavira in concept of Anekantavada(Infinite truths) and by Consequentialist thinkers like Jeremy Bentham in concept of Utility calculus. While on other hand there were some philosophers who advocated existence of some universal moral truths which must be obeyed regardless of time and situation. For ex Slavery is unethical and it is a eternal law. Slavery was unethical in the past, unethical in the present and will be unethical in future. Slavery can not be justified on situational grounds. Philosophers like Immanuel Kant(Principle of Universlaity) & John Lock(Theory of Fundamental Rights) believed in existence of such Universal moral laws. Thus I believe both views have their merits and demerits. While relativism allows scope for moral flexibility and accepts existence of multiple truths thus promotes tolerance and diversity which is necessary for handling complexities created out of globalized world. But relativism suffers form weakness that it may lead to moral stagnation of society and we need some absolute moral truths to create better society free from slavery, trafficking, child labour etc. A critical analysis suggests that the truth may lie in recognizing the dynamic interplay between relativism and universality.
