Believe it or not, there are multiple spots in the ocean that are known as "dead zones", but there are two in particular that need to be noted. One is because of a chemical and nutrient imbalance, while the other is about location. The second one is referred to as "Point Nemo", which is the literal most remote spot in the entire ocean, and because of that, it's a place that has little life. 8. The Finding Of Point Nemo Hrvoje Lukatela is the man and explorer who is known for finding Point Nemo, but there is a small catch to that "finding". Mainly, he's never been there himself. How does that work? That would be because he found Point Nemo via a computer program in 1992. So instead of mapping it out himself, he had the computer did it for him. Which might make you think that his calculations are wrong, but in fact, he went and used special math models to calculate the actual sphere shape of the Earth to further embolden his findings. 7. Reaching Point Nemo One of the things that has to be noted about Point Nemo is that there haven't been a lot of people who have actually been to that spot. Because of it being over 1600 miles from the nearest piece of land, that means that getting to this particular point is not only hard, it's troublesome, and expensive. Even some of the bigger ships that have lots of fuel would have some issues getting to there because it's not easily reachable. Hence the nickname for Point Nemo as "The Point Of Inaccessibility". 6. The Bloop One of the first things to truly "be found" with Point Nemo was not a creature, but a sound. You see, in 1997, researchers that were able to make it to Point Nemo were also able to insert microphones into the depths of the waters. What's more, they were able to put them 3000 miles apart from one another in order to listen to volcanic activity in the area. When the microphones got tripped, scientists were shocked to not just hear sound, but hear the loudest deep-sea sound ever recorded. 5. Bacteria There are many questions about why Point Nemo isn't able to sustain life in a grander sense, and part of it is because of it being directly above the fault line of two tectonic plates. This means that there are vents that exude tons of heat that shoot into the water and cause imbalances and temperatures that most life can't live in. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and that includes 20 species of bacteria that have been found within the first 1500 feet of Point Nemo. 4. Hairy Yeti Crab The Yeti is a mythical creature said to live in the mountains of Tibet. The Yeti Crab is a crustacean that happens to live on the oceans floor near heated vents. So why is the latter named after the former? Two reasons, one, its shell is pure white (and the Yeti is said to be covered in white fur), and its arms are covered in a weird type of fur. 3. Space Junkyard What might surprise most of you is that while it's true Point Nemo doesn't have a lot of oceanic life in it, that doesn't mean that it's empty. Rather, ever since 1971, Point Nemo has become a cemetery of sorts. What kind of cemetery? Simple, one for space parts and crafts from various missions into outer space! 2. Is Cthulhu Near Point Nemo? I'm sure to some you, reading that Cthulhu might be "near" Point Nemo is hilarious. If you're not aware of the creature, Cthulhu is from a more...occult pantheon of gods, and is one that is based mostly in the writings of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. To the extent that he wrote that Cthulhu was in an underwater building near Point Nemo. 1. The "Other" Dead Zones Aside from Point Nemo, there are other areas in the ocean that are known as "Dead Zones", but for an entirely different reason. These dead zones are caused when areas of water, from points in the ocean, to lakes, and more, aren't given enough oxygen to allow types of life to thrive. Oxygen is a basic need for life, even in the oceans, and so if there is no oxygen, they can't live. #mysterious #ocean #worldlist |
