In simple words, it acts as a backup when there is no sunlight. Like any other electrical appliance, the batteries do suffer wear and tear with time and their performance degrades. The depth of discharge is the extent of charge taken out of the battery. For example, the 100% DOD means that the battery is empty while 0% DOD means, the battery is full. The manufacturers specify the maximum recommended DOD of the battery for its optimum performance. If you discharge it beyond this limit, the performance degrades. It is because the electrolyte present in the battery degrades more quickly. On the other hand, when you take less current, you have more useful cycles in hand and battery life improves. Which type of DOD suits you depends on the energy requirements and the configuration of the system. For example, In a standalone system where the electric supply is erratic batteries with high DOD are required. Whereas in a grid-tied system where electric supply is smooth, low DOD batteries may run well.
