| Video Discription | Diomede, AK is dependent upon helicopter service for mail, supplies, and passenger travel. From January 22, 2015 to February 12, 2015, the helicopter was unable to make its regular weekly flights due to maintenance issues. The media exploded with stories about this situation around February 11. This video shows what our store looked like on February 14, before the helicopter brought in major grocery shipments. As mentioned in the video, the core issue was not that Diomede was completely out of food, but that many villagers did not have the funds to purchase the remaining food since they hadn't received mailed checks. To compound the issue, some of the last passenger loads the chopper made were to bring visitors to the island for a funeral. Those visitors have been stuck here since then, being housed and fed by their friends and relatives. |
