| Video Discription | On 1/24/23, a line of storms stretching 80+ miles across Southern Texas was moving in our direction. A confirmed very strong and dangerous F2 tornado came within a few hundred yards of our van, and we had nowhere to go. We had just a few minutes after the warnings surrounded us and had seconds to react when the alarm sounded. FAQ Answers: 1– This particular event occurred in January, which is not the season for tornadoes. Although there was a slight risk that day, the meteorologists predicted the worst storms would pass over us. 2– We were in Texas for work then, and Zach had just gotten off not even an hour before the meteorologists predicted we would have more severe weather than they initially expected. Keep in mind this was a line of 80+ miles of storms moving across South East Texas. 3– The events leading up to the tornado took place in less than 30 minutes, and we wouldn’t have been able to unhook our rig to drive away & seek a different shelter option in that amount of time. So we decided to stay put as they announced it was unsafe to travel. 4– If we had been able to leave, the only road out of the campground and towards town was directly affected, and we would have more than likely driven right into it as our timing would have put us in its path on the drive out. 5– Even if we could have made other arrangements to get out of the van, the nearby (and only) hotel in the area where we could take refuge ended up getting hit. 6– With that said, this is our full-time home and daily life, as it has been for the past six years. We were thousands of miles from family & friends in unfamiliar territory. 7– As vloggers, we film everything we do, not to mention Zach loves storms and pulls the camera out during all of them in hopes he will catch some beautiful lightning strikes. 8– This was categorized as a powerful and dangerous F2 tornado. One person in a mobile home was killed, and many others were injured. So while we were fortunate to have made it out safely with our van intact and unharmed, others did not. And we feel for the families who were affected. This is no laughing matter, and our decision to seek shelter outside of the van was the right one for us at that moment. We’d also like to mention on the adjacent street to our campsite, campers were overturned, shredded, and thrown against trees, and homes & garages were demolished. (These things are not shown in this footage, we couldn’t get down that road to investigate or help clean up as it was destroyed and closed by officials until later in the week.) Our hope in all of this now that we’re safe and it’s all over is to share how dangerous and unpredictable a tornado can be, and while a ditch is the last resort, it has saved lives and can if there is no other option. While our lifestyle is technically considered “camping,” this is not camping for us. We are simply living our regular life and filming as we go!
