I’m 32 and got married about 18 months ago. About 4 months into our marriage my mother passed away after fighting cancer for about 9 years. After my mothers death I started to notice a change in the way that I want to live my life. I’ve become more selfish and much less willing to do things that I don’t want to do. I have adopted a mentality of “you only get one shot at this, the clock is ticking so you better do what you want, and get what you want out of this life”. During that time a noticeable disconnect has occurred between my wife and I. My wife has a strong desire to have children, and for me that represents a risk or threat to the freedom that I want out of life. I’ve recently had thoughts of divorce and have discussed my lack of desire to have children and my changing vision of how I ideally want to live my life. It’s caused some substantial heartache for my wife and difficult times in our marriage. Part of me feels like the right thing to do is get a divorce and allow my wife to find someone else who can give her what she wants. Another part of me feels guilty for changing my mind and altering my vision of what I want in life. I think the idea of marriage is difficult for me to buy into at this point...marriage seems to be resistant to change for both individuals and both parties are expected to stay who they were when they entered the relationship or change together, which is very difficult. For big changes/decisions like this I often try and justify my thoughts/feelings and actions. I’m struggling to do that with this decision, any advice on thought process, literature on the topic, and just general guidance? I have seen you do a lot of talks on divorce and ending relationships but have not come across one on how to tell your significant other you want a divorce or how to decide if divorce is the right decision.
