The dog ear infection is one of the most common reasons for a pet parent to visit the veterinarian. Dog ear infections are caused by an underlying cause like an allergy or an irritant, but once the infection gets start it is one of two infectious organisms...Bacteria or Yeast. Bacteria and Yeast are the two most common ear infections in dogs. As a veterinarian I will look inside the ear with an otoscope to get any idea of the infection. I am about to diagnose a bacteria or yeast infection based on an year swab. I swab the ear and put it under the microscope. Under the microscope I am able to see the microscope bacteria and yeast and get my diagnosis!!! I can also get a diagnosis by culturing the discharge in the ear. A culture of the dog ear infection is very helpful, because a culture will actually grow the infectious organism causing the ear infection. The culture may take a little longer, but I will know the exact bacteria or yeast that cause the infection, and I will have a better idea of how to treat the ear infection. #dogearinfection, #earinfection, #dogotitisexterna |
