| Video Discription | Dolphin and Porpoise Acoustic Monitoring: Discovering trends in cetacean populations Natural History Live by Nick Tregenza and Joe Dennett The Cetacean Acoustic Trend Tracking (CATT) project is a new, long-term passive monitoring citizen science approach to discovering trends in dolphin and porpoise populations. This method of monitoring can allow scientists to learn more about marine populations without the high costs usually associated with visual monitoring with boat surveys. In this talk you will learn more from Nick (Chelonia) and Joe (Research Development UK) about how these acoustic loggers (F-PODs) work. This project uses citizen participation, novel echo-location acoustics, and animal movement to assess trends in the number of animals from data collected by loggers around the SW of England. These acoustic loggers recognise the echolocation that these animals use to communicate, find food, and orientate. This is a pioneering project linked to others in the Black Sea, Amazon, Kenya, and Baltic. Will it work? Nick Tregenza is the director of Chelonia LTD, and a visiting researcher at the University of Exeter. Nick develops acoustic monitoring instruments that have been vital in the study of echolocation of cetaceans across the world. Joe Dennett is the Director and Research Development Officer at Research Development UK. Joe skippers the Molly Oxford, RDUK’s sailing boat, along with his team and citizen science volunteers to deploy acoustic monitors across the SW of England to learn more about dolphin and porpoise populations.
