One-fifth of the world's marine species of seagrass are found here. Rich with nutrients carried by the current, Shark Bay is home to many marine species. Including a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins that live here year-round. They’ve devised a unique way to hunt for prey that hides on the ocean floor. Some dolphins have learnt to use sea-sponges to protect their snouts, as they nudge their prey loose from the sand. The first record of tool use by any dolphin species worldwide. Another pod from the bay has perfected the art of hydroplaning. The adults use their tails to accelerate and drive their prey within easy reach. They run the risk of becoming stranded themselves. Younger dolphins in the clan hang back - learning the technique through keen observation and trial and error. |
