At that time, Port Royal was a fortified naval base with perhaps as many as 2000 residential homes, in addition to law courts, two prisons, churches and all the necessary creature-comfort, that would normally be found in a town designed to live life to the fullest. The total devastation of this major city in Jamaica, necessitated immediate action on the part of the then Government of Jamaica. The rehabilitation and rehousing of survivors of the earthquake was an urgent requirement. So, in 1692, the Governor of Jamaica acquired 200 acres of land known then as “Colonel Barry’s Hog Crawle,” for the princely sum of £4000….. The sale transaction was handled by a Kingston Attorney, by the name of Nicholas Lawes, on behalf of Mr William Beeston owner of the land. Mr Beeston had apparently and fortuitously acquired the property previously… from Colonel Samuel Barry.
