Elwell served as the FAA's Deputy Administrator before recently taking over as Acting Administrator. During his tenure, he oversaw the implementation of several key aviation safety initiatives, including the integration of unmanned aerial systems into the National Airspace System and the implementation of new pilot training requirements. His departure is coming at a time when the current administration is struggling to find a replacement after Phil Washington withdrew from consideration. The FAA has been under pressure after several near misses as well as Congress working on the upcoming reauthorization act. The second story this week is the release of the Mavic 3 Pro. The 3 Pro and the 3 Pro Cine are the latest addition to the Mavic 3 line up and bring the total number of variance to 8! The 3 Pro is the new flagship with 3 sensors and lenses, covering a range from 28mm to 70mm to 166mm (which is 1x, 3x, and 7x). The main sensor is still the 4/3 sensor from all the other Mavic 3s and the same 7x sensor found on the Mavic 3. The new 1/2” sensor on the 3x camera also sports DLOG-M, a new log format designed to improve image quality. The batteries and overall design remain the same. We will have more information about this drone after we spend some time testing it throroughly. It also appears that with this release, DJI quickly took the Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine from the store and the 3 Classic and 3 Pro are the only two base model available on the consumer side. The 3 Pro is priced between 2,199 and $3889 depending on the controller and number of batteries you want and priced at $4,799 for the Pro Cine version, which includes an internal SSD as well as ProRes. As a last story, Sony announced new upgrades to its Airpeak drone, including an RTK positioning system, a new gimbal and a new battery. If you’re not familiar, this type of system provides more accurate and stable positioning data by using satellite navigation signals and ground base stations. The RTK module is riced at 3999. The new Gimbal, the Gremsy PX1, which is priced at 3999, is designed specifically for the AirPeak. It is compatible with full-size mirrorless cameras such as the Sony A7R 4, The new batteries are expected to be higher capacity than the previous version, bringing the total flight time to 20 minutes with a payload (30 min without).
