| Video Discription | Iranians began voting in a runoff election to replace the late President Ebrahim Raisi. Raisi was killed when his helicopter crashed in mountains near the Azerbaijan border. Big test for Shia theocracy, public apathy has become pervasive in the Islamic Republic. Economic woes, mass protests & tensions in the Middle East have adversely affected Iran. Voters will choose between ex-nuclear negotiator Jalili or surgeon & MP Pezeshkian. Pezeshkian has allied himself with moderates & reformists within Iran’s Shiite theocracy. He has suggested he wants better ties with the West & less enforcement of the hijab law. Jalili, known for his shock of white hair and beard, is known as the 'Living Martyr'. Jalili lost his right leg in combat at the age of 21 during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war. Iran polls: Initial round of voting June 28 saw no candidate get over half of the vote. The initial round of voting also saw the lowest turnout ever for an Iranian election. There've been boycott calls, though voters appear to have made the decision on their own. There’s no widely accepted opposition movement operating within or outside of Iran. There is a general belief in Iran that the president doesn't have enough powers.
