The city is named after the Egyptian victory at the "El-Mansoura Battle" over Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade on 8th February 1250 AD Mansoura was established in 1219 by Al-Kamil of the Ayyubid dynasty and called it "Rose Island" because it was surrounded by water of Nile on three sides and had the largest rose gardens in Egypt. Mansoura lies on the east bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile, in the Delta region. Mansoura is about 120 km northeast of Cairo, the capital of Egypt. |
