| Video Discription | Note that virtually all of these images were inspired by the famous painting by Emanuel Leutze. But how many of the details in the depiction of the famous crossing did Leutze get right? And how many more did the artist get wrong? Painted 75 years after the event depicted, the image was propagandistic: Leutze hoped the image would inspire liberal reformers rising up against repressive European regimes in 1848. Does it matter that Washington is too old in the painting? That he would not have been standing? That it’s the wrong time of day? That the boat is too small? That the ice is oceanic? And, most arrestingly, that the flag so prominently featured, had not yet been created?
