Even though you’ve likely spent the past few months at home surrounded by all of your stuff, you’d probably be hard-pressed to make a list of everything you own. Yet, having an inventory of your belongings can actually come in handy in a few ways. Luckily, the free app Encircle helps make it easy to inventory your house or apartment. So How does it work? Let’s take a closer look at Encircle and some of its potential uses. The first thing to know about Encircle is that, while there is a professional version that costs money, there’s a free service available to renters and homeowners. Whether you’re visiting the Encircle website or signing up via the mobile app, you may notice that there are products geared towards professionals. However, rest assured that there is a free tool for homeowners and renters, allowing them to inventory up to two properties for free. In my experience, it’s a bit easier to navigate the process of choosing the correct option by using the Encircle app. To set up your account, you’ll just need to provide your email address and create a password. In other words, if you reach a point where payment info is required, you’ve probably made a mistake somewhere. If this happens, just back up and make sure to look for the Encircle Inventory option. Next, once you’ve set up your Encircle account, you can organize your inventory by room and catalog photos of your belongings When you’re getting started with Encircle, it will walk you through the inventory process by drilling down from a property, to a room, and then to your items. For the property, you can select from a list of common types or enter a custom name. Similarly, you can then add a room to inventory or start with the exterior. Then, to begin adding items to a selected room, you can snap photos of your belongings, select images from your camera roll, or enter them each individually using text. Personally, I appreciate the ability to take one photo after another and then edit the info after — but you can also elect to do one at a time if you prefer. In addition including photos of your items, you can also easily search the web for the approximate value of your possessions Not only does Encircle allow you to make notes, document things like serial numbers, and attach receipt images to inventory items but it also includes a clever tool for finding the replacement value of your possessions. Using their pricing tool, you can search the sites of several retailers as well as Google to find your item. By default, Encircle will use the name and manufacturer you’ve entered to find the item online, Then, when it recognizes a price, it will highlight it in yellow. Tapping a highlighted price will then allow you to assign that value to the inventory item. Of course, you can always manually enter a value instead, but this is a pretty nifty tool if you don’t know the appraisal amount offhand. While the Encircle mobile app might be most useful for collecting your photos, there’s also a desktop site that could come in handy With your Encircle account, you’ll also have access to Encircle's website. What’s more, your data will automatically sync across both mediums. Because of this, those who don’t care much for typing out a lot of info on their smartphones may prefer to move to their desktop computers to finish entering their data. Additionally, while you can generate PDF or Excel reports from your mobile phone and email them from there, it may be easier for some users to simply do this from their actual computers as well. But, regardless of what you end up using your inventory for, I have to say that Encircle does a great job of helping you prepare it. Therefore I definitely think it’s a tool worth checking out.
