| Video Discription | This is a YouTube Short video of my son at age 7 doing what is known as the “Blow Test”. The purpose of this test is to trigger an Absence Seizure. Doctors will often use this test to see an Absence Seizure for themselves. It is harmless to the child, but is pretty telling. The Blow Test is when an individual continuously blows into a pinwheel/napkin/piece of paper for north of 2 minutes to trigger it. Good news is there is medicine to help control your child’s absence seizure and over time your child will eventually outgrow them. Teachers can help. If you are noticing a child “spaces out” often, take note. Often we mistake absence seizures for daydreaming. If you notice your child or student is not responding to their name even when you touch their shoulder, this could be a red flag for an absence seizure. Best way to know for sure is to talk to your child’s doctor and have them do an EEG (scan of the brain). My sweet guy will have an episode and for him it will often look like he’s spacing out but he will also rock. They can last for 10-30 seconds. Triggers for him can be stress, sleepiness, excitement, anxiety. They have happened at home, at the dinner table, during a baseball game, golfing, etc. Our way of approaching him during an episode is to make sure the area is safe for him (ball not coming at him, not frozen while crossing a street, etc).
