Join the Open Talk with MIT economist Esther Duflo, who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics with her MIT colleague Abhijit Banerjee and scientific consultant Michael Kremer for a new approach to fighting global poverty. More than 700 million people still live in misery. Economists have found the key to gradually solving the problem of poverty due to a series of field studies over the past 20 years. The approach of scientists is to solve a global problem through small but more precise questions at the individual or group level. For example, Banerjee and Duflo conducted an experiment in schools in two Indian cities, during which teaching assistants helped the weakest students. In the short- and medium-term perspective, such assistance proved to be effective. Duflo and her colleagues' discoveries are already helping more than 40 million schoolchildren in India and Africa. And the 46-year-old Duflo herself became the youngest laureate of the prize in economics since its inception in 1969, as well as the second woman to receive this award.
