The water vapor could be evidence of an atmosphere, but it could also come from the star's cool spots. Additional Webb observations may reveal whether the water vapor is associated with the planet, or the star. The discovery of a water vapor atmosphere on a hot rocky planet would be a major breakthrough for exoplanet science. But the question remains: Can a rocky planet maintain, or reestablish, an atmosphere in the harsh environment near a red dwarf star?
