The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo is an American all-weather interceptor, fighter and bomber aircraft manufactured by McDonnell Aircraft. The Voodoo was initially designed to be a long-range bomber escort or penetration fighter for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) however it was later modified as a nuclear-armed fighter-bomber for the Tactical Air Command (TAC) and as a photo reconnaissance aircraft and an all-weather interceptor aircraft. On December 12 1957, Major Adrian Drew flew the F-101 Voodoo to set a world record reaching a speed of 1,207 Miles (1,943 Km/h). The maiden flight of the F-101 Voodoo took place on the 29th of September 1954 and it went into service on May 1957. Primary users were United States Air Force, US Air National guard and the Royal Canadian Air Force. The F-101 Voodoo was finally replaced by the McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet in the 1980s, it retired from active service to the USAF in 1972, U.S Air National Guard in 1982 and the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1984. The F-101 Voodoo played an important role throughout the Cuban Missile Crisis and saw extensive service during the Vietnam War. There were approx. 807 F-101 Voodoo produced. Cost per unit was approx. 1.8 million USD. |
