A major fire broke out at around Thursday midnight, in the underground hydroelectric power station located in the Telangana side of the Srisailam dam over Krishna river, in the Nagarkurnool district. The fire started in auxiliary voltage transformer, of the fourth unit of the power station
As per preliminary reports, each turbine in the hydroelectric power station has the capacity to generate 150 MW power but on Thursday there was a sudden spike in power generation, up to 180 MW, and resulted in a short circuit, causing a fire. According to Nagarkurnool district fire officer Sri Das, five fire services were pressed into service after a call was received by the state disaster response and fire services at 11.40 pm on Thursday. Several teams were sent from Kothakotta, Mahababubnagar, Amarabad, Achampeta, and Atmakur in Kurnool district.
While ten people have escaped the fire accident, nine people are trapped in the power station, of whom seven are employees of the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TS GENCO) and two are employees of a private battery firm.
The trapped TS GENCO officials have been identified as one Deputy Engineer, Srinivas and Assistant Engineers, Venkat Rao, Fathima, Mohan, Sushma, and Sundar.
The other two trapped persons are employees of Amar Raja batteries.
The ten persons who escaped from the fire were rushed to the TS GENCO hospital for treatment.
As many as 30 firefighters have been deployed on the spot
.While the police, disaster management, and National Disaster Response Force officials with the necessary safety gear and oxygen have tried their best to rescue the persons trapped in the fire, the task has proved very tough as huge amounts of thick smoke billowing at the accident site and the flames are raring.
Telangana power minister G Jagadish Reddy reached the spot soon after the accident and is at the site, monitoring the situation, along with various senior revenue and police officials of the district.
Expressing shock over the incident, Chief Minister Sri K Chandrashekhar Rao said he is monitoring the situation and is hoping for those trapped to exit the premises safely. He also spoke to Energy Minister G Jagdeesh Reddy and Transco, Genco CMD SD Prabhakar Rao, who is at the mishap site, and reviewed relief measures.
