Carl defended the musical, observing that it offered smart commentary and a strong story about a group of friends on a cross-country journey. He further added that many artists, such as Charlie Murphy and Snoop Dogg, had wanted to be a part of this show. He also acknowledged the pressure to create more positive portrayals of black characters in Hollywood, but cautioned against creating flawless or untrue characters for the sake of appeasing idealistic views.
