On day 15 of our road trip, my host family and I explored the gorgeous lavender fields in Naka Furano. From our hotel, we headed there and ate some delicious locally grown melons for breakfast. After, we had a snack at the cafe, and then strolled around Tomita Farm, a well known scenic spot in Hokkaido, known for its lavender agronomy. The farm had a myriad of fields with different flowers, lavender being the main focus. We were a bit late for the blooming season, so in the Traditional Lavender Field were a lot of workers tending to the gardens, though there were still some lavender plants in other gardens. Along with lavender ramune (Japanese soda), lavender flavored ice cream and even lavender butter, there’s no shortage of the plants’ uses at the farm. There’s even a one of a kind distillery that is used to manufacture lavender essence.
Once we’d seen what we could, we headed to a nearby michi no eki with souvenirs and treats on brand with the region. Upstairs was even a cool exhibition space which housed works from local artists of the scenery. After that, we headed back north to Biei, and set up at our campsite. Nearby was a delicious (but a little pricey) burger restaurant where we had a late lunch. My host parents suggested I take a bike ride around the trail, and so I set off, taking pictures and videos along the way. Along the way, I took in the eerily beautiful Shirogane Blue Pond, a man made water feature with a striking blue hue. I continued my trek up the mountain with Mount Biei and Mount Tokachi far in the distance.
The sweeping landscape at the top was breathtaking, and I relished in the nature, before heading back down to the campsite. I played soccer with the kids, we all had dinner, and then went to the onsen to shower and relax. For the next day, we prepare to see more local sights, and then make our way to the eastern side of Hokkaido, checking out a bunch of different roadside stops on the way.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed! If you have any further questions or thoughts, be sure to drop them down in the comments!
