| Video Discription | The true account of how this bubble tool was created and why it was released. I invented the Garland String Soap Bubble Wand back In 2004/2005 because I had a problem. After months of working on all sorts of ideas to solve the problem, the Garland String design was the most elegant solution I could muster. The Garland was new, different and worked wonderfully. So, I went with it. Cautiously at first. Careful to limit exposure in the press or on the web where others might run away with my idea. Since then thousands (almost certainly millions -2012) have gazed in pleasant wonder at the produce of this design. Bubblers all over the world now build and tweak these Garland Strings intent on unleashing bazillions of bubbles in order to delight themselves and others. Why after all didn't I try to "cash in" on the idea? Why not keep it secret as long as possible? Why not any number of reasons I might have had to convert the idea into personal profit? Lots of reasons I suppose. Mainly this: Giving the idea away with no strings attached helped to pay down debts I had built up in the preceding years. I was bit by the bubble-bug in 2000. No other way to describe it. At first blush I was fascinated by the science of how they work and intrigued by the thought of what artfully can be done with them. In the years that followed, I built up considerable debts in two accounts: 1. A pair of seasoned pro-bubblers (Tom Noddy & Sterling Johnson) helped me immeasurably when they didn't have to and (entrepreneurially speaking) probably shouldn't have. I'll never be able to repay their encouragement and advice. 2. Through research I discovered a thin lineage of forebubblers stretching back hundreds of years and over at least three continents. People who thought of exciting and fun things to do with bubbles. People who laid the foundations for our work with bubbles today. So in 2007, with debts owed to forebubblers past and present, I decided to gift the Garland String to all bubblers in perpetuity. Gratis. So there would be no turning back, I sealed the deal: produced and released a video with footage of the device and how it works —this same video on YouTube— as the means of disclosure. Even in 2007 we knew that once something was "out there" on the web, it could never be reeled back in. Not until 2009ish was the design "discovered". I would catch rare video sightings. Once in China (a grandfather making bubbles with a Garland for his grand kids). Then Central Park NYC... a busker. Before long the SBF community unleashed their own creative energies on the Garland which multiplied exposure for the design and as they say, "The rest is history". It has been a fun ride. I've learned a lot about our forebubblers and more about myself than I anticipated. Tracking the growth of Garland Wand usage has been a useful exercise. This (along with more carefully crafted internet bubble experiments) gives me a better sense of how our art is likely to evolve, where the bubble "hot spots" are on the globe & whether or not others see the value of open sourcing their work. Turns out that people are exponentially more inclined to borrow others ideas than share their own. Sadly, too many bubblers are happy to simply pirate the hard work of others, call it their own and sell it for what little they can manage to get. It has always been so but it hasn't always been so easy for the lazy ones. The internet is a two edged sword. So go ahead and have fun with my Garland. Do me a favor though and make it Your Own first before you go "Pro". Adapt it, change it use it as a base for something better. Hack it. The Garland is open source after all.
