Then we will dig into the memory a little deeper and demonstrate how to properly configure & install your DIMMs. If you are familiar with the HP DL380p Gen 8, then you will be in good shape. They are basically the exact same server. The only difference is the CPUs in side. The DL385p Gen 8 is a 2U HP server running on two AMD Opteron 6200 or 6300 series processors., which is a G34 CPU Socket. The DL385p Gen8 has 24 memory slots. Size options include 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB modules. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz and up to 1866MHz. There are two types of RAM which are compatible with the HP DL385p Gen 8 server: ECC Registered (RDIMMs), which is the more common DIMM especially for smaller sizes, and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs), which are more popular for the larger module sizes. This is a crucial detail. The type of RAM you decide to use will ultimately effect the max scalability down the line so it is important you know the difference. To begin with, LRDIMMs can max out at 768GB (24 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-14900L 1866MHz ECC Load Reduced Server Memory. On the flip side, RDIMMs are a bit capped and will only max out at 512GB (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3L-12800R 1600MHz ECC Reg Server Memory. Loaded Reduced memory has a higher overall capacity while also providing a faster speed for 32GB DIMMs. Quick note - you can use 1866MHz for 4GB 8GB or 16GB ECC Reg. However, there are no 1866MHz 32GB DDR3 ECC Reg DIMMs as they were never invented. A common question we hear. How come you can only max out at 512GB with ECC Reg memory with the HP ProLiant DL385p Gen 8 server. This is an excellent question. With ECC Reg you can only use 16 DIMM slots due to the fact all 32GBs DDR3 ECC module are 4Rx4 (Quad Rank). This is a very, very key factor. The Rank Rule effect ECC Reg modules. You cannot go over 8 ranks per memory channel. If you do go over 8 ranks, then you break the rank rule for HP’s DL385p Gen 8 and your system will start to throw errors. We will discuss the rank rule in more depth in our video while also showing proper techniques for configuring & installing your HP server memory.
