Keeping that in mind, I’m going to give a brief overview of its historical perspective, including the most important historical facts about early gangster films. Contemporary gangster movies are quite different from early gangster films. You’ll also discover some of the many negative stereotypes that the gangster genre has created. These have captured the cultural imagination over time in ways that bear little or no relationship to reality. Looking at a genre historically can tell us a lot about how and why that genre operates in our contemporary world. Developing your familiarity with its history will help you understand how the filmmakers working in the gangster genre make meaning of the world and influence how we perceive it.
