Here's why it's not really possible to make truly passive income online, and how you should actually try to build long-term strategies. My name's Gil Gildner, and I'm the author of a handful of marketing books and the cofounder of a small technical marketing company called Discosloth. I've worked with companies like Volvo, MSF, Tyson, and others, and have traveled to over 45 countries. ------------- Used to be, affiliate marketing was a viable way to make massive income online. And it still is, on a certain scale. Companies like the Wirecutter or Gear Junkie make a lot of money from affiliate programs. A lot of successful internet companies have affiliate programs that get them leads and pay quite well for it, at the same time. But it’s not passive income at all, and there is a huge threshold to cross in order to qualify for most of these programs. These legitimate programs are highly competitive, and are relationship based. You can’t just sign up with a spammy affiliate offer company and expect to make a lot of money, and even if you do manage to make money from it, there is nothing passive about it. It’s probably way more work to make money that way than actually just doing some freelance work. Affiliate marketing like the gurus teach it is unsustainable. They teach this automated method of generating quick websites, funneling visitors through Facebook ads, and trying to arbitrage ad clicks. It just doesn’t work. There’s a reason these guys are selling courses. Courses sold to gullible idiots make them a lot more money than the actual affiliate income. Focusing on a long-term strategy is the way to go. But it’s not a get rich quick scheme. For example, I’ve been working on a few websites for a couple years now. Each is probably worth around 10 to $20,000 now. We literally have only just recently began monetizing them. We waited months and years before we tried to monetize. Play the long game, focus on quality, and build communities. Don’t just spam the internet and hope you’ll get rich, because you won’t. |
