This is a Sherry that was initially aged under flor to become a fino or amontillado, but unpredictably loses its veil of flor and begins aging oxidatively as an oloroso. This in turn makes these casks rare and expensive because they are always sought after for finishing whiskey. That means that the whiskies are usually pricey and if you can get one at a good price it is almost worth taking the risk of purchasing it. That is what I did with the Glenmorangie Palo Cortado but I do try to read as many reviews as I can find so I am not investing in a dud. That is necessary for me because I pay out of my limited budget for the many whiskies that I review. I must say I do get excited when I get a chance to try a Palo Cortado finished whisky because they are rare and unique. My understanding is that only about 1.5% of the grapes pressed for sherry naturally develop into Palo Cortado so it is the rarest of all sherry varieties. That translates into less than 100.000 bottles sold a year, compared to the rest of the 60 million bottles sold world wide. What I found peculiar is that in Great Britain the Palo Cortado is priced higher than the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruben 14, the Nectar D'Or 12, a Tale of the Forest, the Cadboll Estate 15, the Amontillado 12 Finish and the Malaga Cask 12 finished whisky. It was actually shocking in a good way when I looked at the price in Canada. The Palo Cortado was priced below all these other whiskies. So did the exporter or importer make a mistake on the pricing in my favor. You bet I took a risk and bought a 2nd bottle because there is only a hand full of bottles left at the BCL in all of BC. It's funny how whisky that is in short supply is suddenly now more desirable. All the same it was a good price in Canada at $99. So what did I think of the whisky. To find out let's watch the review.
