Though the actual truth about how pasta alla Norma got its name is unknown legend has it that it was coined by Nino Martoglio who loved the dish so much he compared it to the Bellini masterpiece. The other story claims Bellini while writing Norma ordered this dish everything he went to his favorite restaurant and thus it was named after the opera in his honor. The reality is that this dish and Bellini’s opera survive to this very day and both are considered classics. Eggplant, garlic, tomatoes, and basil are a combination made in heaven.
