Recession of the gum tissues takes place from either aggressive tooth brushing, thin gum tissue that is prone to shrinking or the bone loss associated with periodontal (gum) disease. The gum tissues in the mouth provide an impermeable barrier for the bacteria to get into the bone and blood steam. The attached tissues next to the teeth provide this barrier and if it is lost there are is a risk of infection and tooth loss. This video shows a grafting procedure that is used to create more of this barrier tissue.
