| Video Discription | This Gurusthalam of Ashtamaasidhi Dakshinamoorthy is situated in Pattamangalam, a Chettinad village which is 10 KM from Tirupattur, 24 KM from Karaikudi and 66 KM from Madurai in Tamil Nadu State (Province) of Southern India. The temple has a massive tank (dry and not maintained), with an excellent central Mandap (structure). The Sacred Banyan tree (that is common in Gurusthalams) is quite a massive one here and surprisingly, it is growing outward, not damaging the temple structure close by. The name Pattamangalam arises from two words: Patta and Mangai, which is explained in sthalapuraanam (origin) as: Lord Shiva's foot "set-in" here (Patta) to give saabavimosanam to six Karthigai PengaL (Mangai), after 1000 years, in there is much older and ancient Shiva Temple, where Dakshinamoorthy (Guru) has a separate sannidhi, surrounded by the Great Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis). Numerous Naagar (Snake Statues) under the base of the Banyan Tree and the tree itself, are worshipped. the six women (Mangais) are connected to the genesis of Lord Muruga. This temple and the sthalapuraanam are described in "Thiruvilaiyaadal Puraanam" in Chapter-33. This temple is maintained by a Trust of a Chettiar Family, which regained control through a court-fight, against the take over by State Government. Very neat and clean maintenance. Sage Manickavaasagar has sung a song about this divine spot, in "Thiruvaasagam". There are similar sounding names of places near Pudukkottai and Kumbakonam, but this is private, cam, serene and unique. |
