The Shakti engine is the backbone of HAL’s rotor craft be it ALH Dhruv, Rudra or the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand. A variant of the same engine Ardiden 1U powers the new Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). More than 500 Shakti engines have already been produced till date. As we all know that HAL is developing a 13-ton class helicopter called IMRH(Indian Multirole Helicopter) which will also be powered by a new engine to be developed by Safran and HAL. During Aero Indian 2023, Safran Helicopter Engines and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have signed a workshare agreement for the joint development of the engine intended for IMRH. This agreement follows the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed on 8th July 2022 and stipulates the sharing of activities within the joint venture where both parties have agreed on an equivalent repartition. In particular, HAL will take part in the design, development, and production of some of the core engine components, which is a breakthrough achievement in terms of expertise and know-how in the country. Both partners also agreed on the condition for the transfer right to HAL for manufacturing of seven critical forging and casting raw parts, for further enhancement of indigenous content in Shakti engine of Dhruv and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) programs. As per the 17th August ET report, The HAL CMD, CB Ananthakrishnan told that for the development of a new engine for IMRH, a joint venture is being formed with Safran. The joint venture will be in place within the next three months. The engine will be a joint developed and IPR (intellectual property rights) will remain within the country (India). The HAL CMD also told that the project timelines are very short and HAL need to come up with the helicopter within 6 to 7 years. Things now are moving very fast.
