| Video Discription | One of the simpler acid base theories states that acids donate H+ ions and bases donate OH- ions. When HCN (Hydrogen cyanide) dissolves in water it breaks apart into H+ and CN- ions. The H+, called the hydrogen ion, makes HCN an acid. Other acid base theories also describe HCN as an acid. H+ is often written as H3O + (the Hydronium ion). They are equivalent. Because HCN is a weak acid, it dissociates only partially in water. This means that most of the HCN stays together. If we tested the pH it would be l below 7 meaning that HCN is an acid. For a base the pH would be above 7. In short, HCN (Hydrogen cyanide), is a weak acid. Note that HCN is a highly poisonous gas. |
