Though it was collected in 1908 from the singing of Cardiffian Mary Davies, she manifested having heard it first as a child in Llangammach Wells in 1828. A fair had come to town, and a man named David Evans was singing this beautiful song, which he in turn had learned from the singing of famous travelling bard and tailor Thomas Elias, Y Bardd Coch (The Red Bard).
