As a US international student pursuing a STEM degree presents several benefits such as;
1. Obtaining up to 3 years of work authorization without the need for U.S. work visa sponsorship
2. A stable and growing industry with a high demand for recent graduates
3. Higher starting salaries relative to degrees from Non-STEM majors.
However, not all STEM majors pay high salaries upon graduation, relative to the average starting salary of Bachelor's degree holders. In fact, most of them do not.
Only the Technology and Engineering majors pay the highest starting salaries without much variation. While majors falling into the categories of Science and Mathematics pay lower starting salaries.
For example, a bachelor's degree holder in Chemistry earns a median starting salary of about $40,000 which is significantly less than half of the starting salary of the top engineering majors.
These are the 10 STEM majors with the highest median starting salaries with a Bachelor’s degree. These salaries were obtained from reported data from over 50 public and private U.S. universities.
4 caveats to the raking system used in this video:
1. Based on starting salaries right after graduation not after 5+ years like most others
2. Based on B.S degree holders only: Expect upwards of $10,0000 for MSc. and PhD. degree starting salaries.
3. Based on median salaries:
4. Based on 2020 salary data, so rankings are subject to change in the future.
