This, and the question of "objectivity" in history are fundamental theoretical concepts any historian must have an understanding of. I'll give a brief introduction to these concepts, and quote from respected historians, whom you can read more from in order to understand these concepts at a higher level. Some of the books I reference are frequently used in graduate and undergraduate studies of history. If you do, my recommendation is John Lewis Gaddis' Landscape of History.
