| Video Discription | A comprehensive home defense plan is about preparing for potential criminal activity, as well as events like fire or medical emergencies. The four main types of criminal incidents to prepare for are: (1) The unexpected knock at the door (discussed in our previous video). A daytime knock at the front door is reasonable. At night after dinner or at any other door is suspicious. Never just open the door! (2) Daytime robbery. Somebody tries to break in and rob you when you're home. How you react depends on who else is in the house. If you're alone, it may be best to retreat to your "strong point," where you have your firearm and a landline phone. Jeff explains why a hardwired residential telephone is still a good idea. (3) Nighttime robbery. You're at home, probably asleep, and the first thing you hear is a loud crash of a physical breach of a window, door, etc. Identify where the disturbance is coming from before you do anything. (4) Robbery in progress. You arrive home while your house is being burgled. Best response is to LEAVE and call the police as soon as you can. Critical to having a good plan is rehearsing your response to each of these scenarios. It's basically a grown-up version of the school fire drill. Physical execution of the plan shows you its flaws, things you need to change or improve. |
