These frogs have a pouch located on their back, hence the name Riobamba marsupial tree frog. This is an Andean Marsupial Tree Frog. Astonishingly they're native to Ecuador in fact they're only endemic to a confined valley in the Andes. Sadly this species is endangered and it's our duty as humans to help build up the population. The male fertilizes the eggs externally after massaging them out her cloaca. He then moves her eggs from her cloaca area and puts them into her pouch. The females pouch then closes up tight until she gives birth to tadpoles. This courtship lasts for hours. Its Pretty amazing. It takes around 6 weeks before the mother lays the eggs into a body of water and they continue to go through metamorphosis which only takes a few weeks. |
