The Mediterranean city-state of Monaco begins a 10 month celebration on Wednesday, marking seven centuries of rule by the Grimaldi family.
Prince Rainier will start proceedings with a Catholic Mass and a series of events in the city's harbour - but the plans have been greeted by a wave of public apathy.
The streets in the affluent resort are quiet and international interest is muted.
It's all a stark contrast with the blaze of publicity that has surrounded the Royal family in recent years - with the paparazzi focusing on Princesses Stephanie and Caroline.
Monaco has long enjoyed a reputation as the Mediterranean playground of the super- rich, with money flowing into the coffers of its citizens for over a century.
The city only occupies two square kilometres of the Riviera coastline - but its managed to stay independent of its larger neighbours for a great deal longer than that.
The Grimaldi family took the helm in 1297 and the flags are already flying for the occasion.
On Wednesday, Prince Rainier will lead the Royal family in a mass and public events that starts ten months of official celebrations.
The Prince made Monaco globally famous in the 1950's when he married the American movie star Grace Kelly.
The apparently ideal couple and their beautiful children made great publicity - but in the 1980's the dream turned sour.
Princess Grace was killed in a car crash in 1982 and her daughters have been involved in a series of lurid scandals and failed marriages.
The heir to the throne - Prince Albert - has enjoyed a quieter profile and fears that people mix up the image of the family with that of the country.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"What we're trying to have people understand is that our private life is our private life. Whatever happens there should not necessarily influence what people's perception of Monaco is, whether in terms of leisure or business terms, or other political terms, and that's very hard to do."

Despite the attentions of the paparazzi, Monaco retains its image as an exclusive resort with modern leisure pursuits competing with the traditional allure of the casino.
Nowadays, noble clients are less in evidence among the slot machines of the 19th century casino - but money is still being spent.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"As Monte-Carlo definitely means Casino, many people come here
just to visit the place and like gambling a few 1 franc coins"

There are less than 6,000 native Monagesques, but the combination of good weather and a favourable tax system continues to attract the well-heeled.
25 thousand of them live in the principality living space has become a touchy issue. .
It can cost up between 10,000 and 20,000 dollars a square meter to buy an apartment but Monaco has managed to find room to please those wishing - and who can afford it- to become residents.
The solution in the land-hungry little state is not in the air, by building more skyscrapers, but on the sea, by gaining space on the water.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"So far, we have gained more than one third of the actual surface of the country on the sea, and one of the solutions for the future is to build up new areas on the sea."

The principality has traditionally kept a sharp eye on its economic and financial activities with its banking sector helping to maintain its independence.
His son and heir Prince Albert, is determined to follow in his father's footsteps.
