This video teaches students the process of creating amendments to the U.S. Constitution and the Virginia State Constitution. Students will learn the history of the amendment process for the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights and how the proposal starts with Congress, and the ratification process includes state legislatures or conventions. They will also learn how amendments to the Virginia Constitution require a simple majority vote in the Virginia General Assembly and ratification by the voters. Examples are provided for both. This video is designed for students taking state exams in Civics and will be helpful to anyone studying Civics, US Government, US History or those taking the US Naturalization exam. This lesson was specifically created for students taking the Civics EOC Exam and Virginia’s Civics SOL Exam. While I have made a series of videos for Florida’s Civics EOC Exam, much of the material on the two-state exams are similar. I will am now going through all of Virginia tested standards, communicating with Virginia Civics Teachers, and reviewing test questions. As a civics teacher, I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) Civics class.
