It was created in 2009 by an unknown person or group of people using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin is often referred to as a cryptocurrency because it relies on cryptographic techniques to control the creation of new units and secure the transfer of assets. One notable feature of Bitcoin is its fixed supply. The total supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, a design choice intended to mimic the scarcity and value proposition of precious metals like gold. This scarcity is achieved through a process called "mining," where participants in the network use powerful computers to solve complex mathematical problems, contributing to the security and maintenance of the blockchain. Miners are rewarded with newly created bitcoins for their efforts. Bitcoin halving is a crucial event programmed into the Bitcoin protocol approximately every four years, or after every 210,000 blocks are mined. During a halving event, the reward that miners receive for validating transactions and securing the network is cut in half. This reduction in the rate of new Bitcoin creation serves to slow down the issuance of new coins, contributing to the overall scarcity of Bitcoin. The most recent Bitcoin halving occurred in May 2020, reducing the block reward from 12.5 to 6.25 bitcoins. The impact of Bitcoin halving events is a subject of much discussion in the cryptocurrency community. Historically, previous halvings have been associated with significant price rallies in Bitcoin.
