As some of you already know, I’m heading back to India for three weeks on November 1, 2018. This time I’ll be visiting Pune, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, and I am so excited to meet more people and try more delicious street food.
People often ask me what I pack for long trips, so I decided to show you what you need to take with you to India.

1. VICTORINOX LUGGAGE
First up is an upright suitcase and carry-on from Victorinox’s Werks Traveler 6.0 collection, my favorite luggage to travel with. It’s stylish, durable, spacious, and lightweight, and glides smoothly on eight wheels. It comes with a removable, padded compartment that allows you to pack your laptop safely and keep your clothes wrinkle-free, a TSA-approved lock, and a USB port that lets you attach a battery to charge all of your gear while it’s inside your bags!
2. FLEECE SWEATER
The temperatures in India can vary drastically from city to city, especially in the winter, so I’m taking a warm, fleece sweater just in case.
3. MEDICATION
The foreign spices in Indian food and pathogens you don’t have immunity to, can wreak havoc on your digestive system, so medications for upset stomach and diarrhea, prescription antibiotics, and electrolyte packets are a must.
4. SANITATION ITEMS
To keep your hands as clean as possible to lower the risk of ingesting harmful pathogens, you’ll need wipes and hand sanitizer. Also, take some toilet paper with you. Many public restrooms in India don’t provide it.
5. COMFORTABLE CLOTHING AND SHOES
You’ll also need light, loose clothing (cargo pants are great because of their multiple pockets) and comfortable walking shoes.
6. CHARGING EQUIPMENT
A ground charger that has two U.S. outlets and two USB ports, an extension cord, and a portable battery pack for my phone are essential for keeping my gear charged.
7. DIRTY CLOTHES BAG
While you’re traveling, you’ll want to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones with an inexpensive, lightweight laundry bag that can easily fit in your luggage.
8. CLOTHING
Take enough clothing for at least half your trip. For my India trip, I’ll ask my Airbnb hosts if they can clean my clothes midway through my trip to prevent me from having to visit laundromats every few days.
9. SUNSCREEN
In India, the sun beats down on you pretty much all day long. To protect your skin, you need to take sunscreen with you, regardless of how dark or fair your skin is.
10. EARPLUGS
India is very loud. If you want any hope of getting sleep while you’re there, you’ll need a pair of earplugs to wear at night. Trust me.
