Here are two ways to promote your impact and achievements that will sound and feel completely natural: • When someone asks you how you’re doing, respond with a story about something you’ve just accomplished. • Share praise for your team for achieving a goal together. By praising your people, you’re also illuminating your own win. Most people don’t promote themselves enough. Being strategic in sharing wins is important. Fortunately, there are natural opportunities to promote yourself every day. Don’t let them slip by! Most of us are a 2 on a scale of 10 when it comes to self-promotion. We’re afraid to speak up about our accomplishments at all, lest it be perceived as bragging. If we double our amount of self-promotion, we might feel like we’re a 10 on the scale even though we’re really a 4 or a 5. Remind yourself that’s just how it feels inside; that’s not how you’re appearing to others. If you don’t do much self-promotion, there’s almost no chance people are going to see you as bragging. In fact, you should be thinking to yourself, “I owe it to both myself and my company to promote myself.” How you go about it will make a big difference in how you’re perceived. Every day, you have opportunities to promote yourself naturally. Next time you wonder, “How can I self-promote in a way that doesn’t feel awkward?”, look for the opportunities that are already there. Even if you’re introverted, sharing your successes in one-on-one conversations doesn’t have to be hard. Just focus on weaving information into everyday conversations, conveying your impact in a subtle way that will really boost your visibility over time. People won’t see it as bragging at all—especially if you give credit to others where it’s due. Plus, you’ll be building relationships as you share success stories and challenges you’ve both overcome. Remember, this isn’t a one-time act—this should be a long-term strategy. You’re not giving an elevator speech about everything you contribute; you’re sharing one piece of it (although you should definitely have that elevator speech at the ready for those moments when you meet a high-level executive, too!).
