They consist of calcified connective tissue and are also involved in the production of red and white blood cells. The bones of the human skeleton consist of several parts and come in various shapes and sizes in order to fulfill their functions. There is an overall amount of ca. 206 bones in the adult human body, ranging from the smallest in the middle ear to the largest, the femur.
