| Video Discription | Wholistic approach to human-snake conflict resolution Dialogues around human-wildlife conflict often tend to put the spotlight on mega fauna and conveniently forget that the most severe conflict in terms of animal and human casualties is conflict with snakes. Every year in India, an average of one million people are bitten by snakes resulting in close to 50,000 deaths and another 150,000 to 200,000 cases of morbidity. Majority of the victims are in their most economically productive age group thereby rendering snakebite not only a human-wildlife conflict issue but one that is also a public health and socio-economic crisis. Recent studies have shown the need to understand and address geographic venom variation, the need to look beyond the big four common venomous species and most importantly, the need to better regulate quality of antivenom. HSI India and its partner organisation- The Liana Trust, are focused on a three-pronged approach to bring down snakebite death to zero in one district of India by 2028 so it can be replicated across the country with highest impact. In the current project district, the focus is on shifting the behaviour of the community from reacting to a bite to proactively avoiding a bite through various interventions (such as solar lanterns and gum boots), building capacity of the medical fraternity to successfully treat snakebite and the first-of-its-kind radio telemetry study on Russells Viper (Daboia russelii) to better understand their ecology and behaviour. These efforts, with the support of the state government, include peripheral activities such as training the custodian government agencies in sustainable snake conflict management. Further, HSI/India and TLT are also invested in conducting similar radio telemetry studies in the other two species of the big four venomous snakes of India to gather comprehensive data on behaviour thereby enabling design of better and more effective prevention strategies for the community. |
