| Video Discription | Triple-digit temperatures in the cities mean one thing on the Oregon coast, people are going to be flocking out to enjoy some reprieve from the heat. But don’t let the water's seemingly calm appearance fool you. Every year the Oregon, Washington and northern California coastlines take two or three lives when people get swept out to sea. The U.S. Coast Guard does not recommend wading or swimming on this coastline as conditions can be treacherous and unpredictable, but if you are going to take the risk, you should do so with the right gear. "You know you hear a lot about rip currents and people getting sucked out to sea. If you don't have a wetsuit on, you probably have about 45 minutes before your body starts to go into hypothermia. If you have a wetsuit on, you probably have about 48 hours,” said Daniel Hasselschwert, Ossies Surf Shop owner. Hasselschwert opened Ossies Surf Shop in Newport 25 years ago and has been teaching water safety and surf lessons since then. "Right now, the water is about as cold as it gets; I'd say it's around 50, maybe about 49," he said. The shop rents and sells wetsuits. "The most versatile and least expensive wetsuit you can get is a 4/3 non-hooded back zip, and these are just really easy to get on and off. They keep you plenty warm," Hasselschwert said. "For folks that are surfing year-round and are in windy conditions and such, you might step up to a 5/4 hooded suit." The 4/5-millimeter lighter wetsuit without a hood goes for around $200 new, the warmer hooded suit costs a little over $300. You can also rent a suit for $25 all day.
