You need about 2-3 weeks to get your body ready for the cold. This video will show you how I get started with this process 00:40 WHY COLD WATER IMMERSION? There are many, healing properties Meditative properties Lessen inflammation Recovery from extreme training For me it has to do with how it is the best form of Body/Mind Meditation I have ever done. 01:58 WATER TEMPERATURE To start you need to shock your body into acclimating for the cold. This is between 55F-60F (13C-14C) for 10-15mins Do that 3-4 times a week for 2-3 weeks and you will be able to stay in the extreme cold for long periods of time This is preparation for the cold The meditative qualities you get from the extreme cold are second to none. 03:09 COLD SHOCK GOALS Allow your body and nervous system to relax in the water. Get to a state where you feel calm and peaceful. If you start shaking in the water and are a beginner get out and take a warm bath until you warm up. It is always good to have someone watching you. 03:27 THE RECIPE FOR EXTREME COLD 55F-60F Water for 10-15mins 3-4 times a week. In about 3 weeks you will be able to move into some extreme cold! Then the amazing meditations will begin!!!! 03:41 BREATHING Watch our other videos on this There's many styles of breathing, but the General Wim Hof Method Breathing is 30 Deep Breaths in and letting it go (not a full exhale) then on the 30th breath you hold (or retain) on the exhale. The Wim Hof Breathing is very easy to start with. You generally do 3 rounds of that before getting in the water, but you can of course do more. I personally do many different types of breathing and body work. For starters go with the Wim Hof 04:22 ENTERING THE WATER I enter the water while retaining on an inhale. This helps with the initial shock of the cold. 04:40 RELAXING The biggest key to the cold immersion is the ability to relax. The first few immersions may feel like torture. It may hurt or be 'intolerable'. At 57F this wasn't too bad. It you have to get out, get out for a min and then try getting back in. Within 5mins you should be able to fully relax and this is where it gets good! This took me about 5mins to get peaceful in the water. If I stick with it this will be almost instant in 2 weeks 05:12 COLD HEAD There are some people who warn against submerging your face while in an ice bath in fear of passing out. I have never had this problem and you should always have a spotter. I feel that getting your head cold is the true key to getting yourself from a relaxed state to a euphoric state. When your head gets cold it is easy to lose balance if you stand up. Be cautious of this. 05:51 AFTER THE ICE BATH After every ice bath I always feel like moving or stretching immediately after. This cold immersion was over 20mins long. I lost complete track of time. I thought it was over 5mins and under 10mins. Normally I am completely amp'd for about 2 hours after. I am also immediately hungry. If I do the bath in the evening I will sleep like a baby. 06:38 ACCLIMATION Remember the goal to build up the acclimation so I can get into extremely cold water in about 2-3 weeks. The extremely cold water is where the real benefits or meditation and healing come, and I will be warm all winter long. 07:17 AFTERDROP If you get so cold that about 5-10 mins after the ice bath you start shivering, get in a warm bath or shower and warm up. |
