Nei tre protagonisti coesistono bellezza e bruttezza, umanità e ferocia: il regista demistifica tutti questi concetti e al contempo, in una dichiarata denuncia della follia della guerra, la stessa Storia degli Stati Uniti d'America mostrandone il lato violento e brutale, appannato dalla tradizione mitizzante dell'epopea western.
