I would say the situation is stable and under control, yet unpredictable. You are aware of the talks, ongoing talks wherein we (India- China) have been able to resolve five of the seven issues that were on the table. And we are continuing to talk both at the diplomatic as well as the military level. In terms of our preparedness levels, they remain of a very high standard. We have adequate forces. We have adequate reserves in each of our sectors to be able to effectively deal with any situation or contingency.” 4. Mid of General Pande at news conference 5. And prevent any attempts from our adversary to unilaterally change the status quo in a firm and resolute manner.” 6. Close of a photographer 7. So, we carried out this assessment and I alluded to the aspect of our reliance on some of the equipment of origin from these countries, which currently we have in service. So, the sustenance of these weapons systems, equipment in terms of spares, in term of ammunition, is one issue that we have addressed.” 8. Mid of General Pande at news conference 9. SOUNDBITE (English) General Manoj Pande, Indian Army Chief: “We are looking at as to how the sustenance requirement is met. We are also looking at how do we look at alternate sources of supply of these spares, which we've had sourcing from these countries. And lastly, I think this is also a good opportunity for the indigenous industry to step up and see if which are the areas where they can, you know, meet our requirements. So, in terms of the supply from these countries, yes, that has been an impact.” 8. General Pande getting up and walking away STORYLINE: India’s army chief said on Thursday the border situation with China is “stable yet unpredictable” after nearly two and a half years of a standoff between the two countries along their disputed border in the Ladakh region that triggered bloody clashes in 2020. General Manoj Pande told reporters that the India and China were continuing to talk both at the diplomatic as well as military level. In June 2020, a fierce brawl exploded into hand-to-hand combat with clubs, stones and fists that left 20 Indian soldiers dead in the Galwan sector in Ladakh. China said four of its soldiers died in the incident. India says China occupies 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory in the Aksai Chin Plateau, which India considers part of Ladakh, where the current face-off is happening. India repeats that any unilateral change in the border status quo by Beijing is unacceptable. Gen. Pande also indicated that the Russian-Ukraine war has impacted the supply of spare parts to India’s military. India depends on Russia for nearly 60% of its defence equipment, and the war in Ukraine has cast doubts on future supplies.
