Prepare yourself to uncover a dark chapter of history that has remained hidden for far too long. This tale of deliberate cruelty, callous policies, and the unthinkable loss of innocent Indian lives awaits to be heard!
So previously, British imperialism unleashed a devastating storm of death upon India, claiming the lives of no less than 100 million individuals within a mere four decades. Can you imagine the brutality?
Over the course of nearly two centuries, the insatiable appetite of the British Empire voraciously devoured a staggering $45 trillion in wealth from the once-prosperous land of India.
Pause momentarily to let that huge figure sink in—trillions of dollars looted and plundered, leaving a nation ravaged and despoiled.
In a groundbreaking study recently published by Columbia University Press, eminent economist Utsa Patnaik delivers a devastating blow to a prevailing narrative. Diving deeper into extensive tax and trade records spanning nearly two centuries, Patnaik unveils that Britain siphoned a colossal sum of almost $45 trillion from India between 1765 and 1938.
Here's a little back story, before colonial rule, Britain conducted business with India like any other nation, purchasing goods such as textiles and rice and customarily paying for them, primarily silver.
However, everything changed in 1765 when the East India Company assumed control of the subcontinent, establishing a monopolistic grip over Indian trade.
To put this into perspective, if we compare the mortality rate in pre-colonial India to that of England during the 16th and 17th centuries, which stood at 27.18 deaths per 1,000 people, we can infer that an additional 165 million lives were lost in India between 1881 and 1920.
Although the exact number of fatalities depends on the assumptions made regarding baseline mortality, it becomes evident that during the peak of British colonialism, roughly 100 million individuals perished.
This catastrophic loss of life caused by policies represents one of human history's most severe mortality crises, surpassing the combined death toll from famines in the Soviet Union, Maoist China, North Korea, Pol Pot's Cambodia, and Mengistu's Ethiopia.
The British control over India manifested in various detrimental ways. First and foremost, the country's industrial sector was virtually decimated. Prior to colonization, India held a prominent position as a global supplier of high-quality textiles, reaching every corner of the world.
However, this dynamic began to change in 1757 when the British East India Company seized control of Bengal. Under the colonial regime, Indian tariffs were effectively eliminated, allowing British goods to flood the domestic market.
Simultaneously, excessive taxes and internal duties were imposed, making it practically impossible for Indians to sell or export textiles within their own nation. Consequently, India's once-thriving industries were annihilated, leading to deindustrialization. These policies were a slow poison for poor civilians who had no escape!
