| Video Discription | In 1997, India signed the Information Technology Agreement (ITA) which aimed to eliminate tariffs on products such as computers, telecom equipment, semiconductors and scientific instruments. However, in 2017, India imposed a 7.5% import duty on ICT products like mobile phones, components, and integrated circuits to increase domestic production and reduce imports. The duty was later increased to 15% and then 20% despite opposition from other WTO members. In 2019, the EU, Japan, and Taiwan challenged the import duty, leading to a recent ruling by a WTO dispute settlement panel that India violated global trade rules. India is expected to appeal the ruling to protect its domestic manufacturing initiatives, with the government's main argument being that some of the products mentioned in the ruling did not exist when India signed the ITA.
